The research in mice found that the cleanup system in the brain, which flushes out toxic waste products that build up each day, goes into overdrive during sleep - brain cells even shrink so that its easier to clean around them. The discovery could help explain why people spend a third of their lives asleep, and may lead to treatments for Alzheimers disease and other neurological disorders.
