The restoration of the lighthouse is now virtually complete. A few final details required the lighthouse to be moved outside so it seems only fitting that the old structure be brought out during National Lighthouse Day. The lighthouse will not be opened to the public until it has been placed on the waterfront but you can catch a glimpse of it as you drive west on Perry Street starting from about Jefferson Street. This is a huge milestone and marks another step toward the end of a journal that began almost four years ago. Our endless praise goes out to those devoted volunteers who have given so much of their time and effort toward the completion of this project. The final step in this journey is placement in Waterworks Park (which we hope to see renamed Lighthouse Park. Is there an eager city council member who wants to take on this project?). Some weeks ago the city submitted a request for a submerged lands lease from the Office of Coastal Management (OCM) for that section of land in Waterworks Park adjacent to Lake Erie. OCM approved granting of the lease and requested the city to, among other things, submit a letter requesting a sub-lease for that parcel of land upon which the lighthouse will be located. This 25 by 30 piece of property is located north of and centered on Derby Pond. When the OCM receives this letter and $1 fee for the lease, it will forward the request to Columbus for review and signature by the head of ODNR and the governor. We cannot break ground in the park until this happens. Please urge your city officials to expedite this process so we can return the lighthouse to the lakefront. I can think of no better way for people to feel pride in their city again.
