The retired pastor no longer looked me in the eye as he said, “Years ago I had a friend, once.” Seven words that said it all. It seems that in days long ago the ministers were taught that they should not have friends in church but remain separate and aloof as a matter of respect. The loneliness that suddenly pervaded the atmosphere was palpable and the subject quickly changed. His successor was deeply influential in my earlier life but was little different, having caught what he was not officially taught. And that is where this pernicious, destructive protocol had to end even when well-meaning people felt that they should perpetuate it. Unplugged is one of those new-born cool words that we never had in our dictionaries, but it fits well. Unplug me please. Let me be me, as I am, with you as you are, my weaknesses on display for all to see, as I see yours. Let’s eat together, talk and pray with each other, unplugged from every pretence. Who are we kidding, anyway?
