The revelations in “Dirty Politics”, true or not, simply - TopicsExpress

The revelations in “Dirty Politics”, true or not, simply reinforce a perception that over time politicians become increasingly arrogant. They know better than the people who voted for them, so they can disregard promises or pursue ideological dogma based on the flimsiest of justifications. They can even justify to themselves a stretching of the law for the greater good (at least of themselves). No recent multiple term Government party has been immune. The biggest problem of these revelations is that it provides a distraction for politicians, media and voters alike from the important discussions around policies. You will be hard pressed to find any blog or media piece in New Zealand which isn’t preoccupied with “Slatergate”, and missing anything about how the various parties are going to sort out the current financial mess in NZ still promoted as a rock star economy. If any political party or parties are triumphant on election night based on a voter reaction to the book rather than the policies of the Government during the last 6 years, and the proposals of the coming 3 then, just like our politicians, our electoral system will have reached a new low. - Nick W
