The revival of the crusader mentality among the Europeans The more technologically advanced western society became after the Industrial Revolution, the more atheistic and materialistic it became in its outlook. Religion gradually became less important and less relevant in their lives to the point that today, the majority of Europeans and Americans are effectively Christians in name only, neither practicing their religion nor believing in it. People are largely influenced by the cultures and habits of the powerful nations that dominate them. The great Muslim historian Abd ar-Rahman ibn Khaldun [rahimahullah] observed that whenever the Muslims were dominated by other people, the Muslims would imitate their habits and culture, but whenever the Muslims were dominant over other people, those people would imitate the Muslims. This has proven to be especially true in the past century. Many Muslims all over the world, as a result of their weakness and defeatism, have been dazzled by the mirage of the secularism of the kafir west and its perceived successes, and have blindly and unquestioningly embraced it. The majority of the governments in the Muslim lands have embraced secularism, and in many places the people have turned away from their religion en masse. Ibn Khaldun also observed that history moves in cycles, and that for everything there is a rise and fall. This is in contrast to the superficial and short-sighted opinion of many modern western historians that history is in a process of constant advancement and evolution, a view no doubt influenced by the atheistic Darwinian theory of evolution. Over the past few centuries, many so-called intellectuals and visionaries have appeared in the west who viewed their own ideal conception of the society – whether communist, socialist, capitalist, or today, liberal democratic – as the ultimate point of human evolution, and simply could not even imagine that their ideology could possibly fail or become obsolete. All of them were proven wrong. Is it not then time for these people, who continue to recklessly apply Darwins highly disputed theory to their own ideals and fancies, to learn from the mistakes of those before them, and to wake up from this illusion? Any return of the Muslims to their religion and the rise of a powerful Islamic rule in the Muslim lands – which must certainly occur – will result in a corresponding weakening and decline in the western countries. Such has always been the push-and-pull nature of the great powers throughout history. Logically, this would lead to many Christians in the west becoming influenced by the great importance that the Muslims give to religion, with the result that those Christians – if they do not become Muslims – will most likely return to their own religion with a renewed fervour. Many people have in fact witnessed this phenomenon becoming more common in our own time. The increasing hardships and the threat of the disintegration of society after the fall of the credit-based economy and the decline of technology would also be a major factor in the return of the Christians to their religion, as many people tend to take refuge in religion when everything else that they had put their faith in fails.
