The rhetoric surrounding Ferguson is frustrating because it takes two very real, very serious problems and makes a false dichotomy out of them. Problem 1: The militarization of American police. Real. Serious. Problem 2: The racist culture of victimhood which believes that any bad thing that happens to black person stem from white racism. Real. Serious. In Ferguson, both problems are very clearly in evidence, but the situation is presented as if they were mutually exclusive and youre supposed to pick one. If you say the rioters are wrong, its taken as a defense of the police tactics. If you say the police are wrong, its taken as a vindication of the rioters. Its not a dichotomy.
