This is a seismic social shift, with the inevitable result that some women will not handle these unprecedented changes well. One of the unhappy effects is that it leaves most women to make difficult, profound life choices and career decisions on their own. While the social bonds and common values that historically kept families and neighborhoods close have weakened considerably, the numbers of women alone and/or with great individual responsibility has risen alarmingly.
