The risk of breast cancer is increased in the period immediately - TopicsExpress

The risk of breast cancer is increased in the period immediately after childbirth, but this risk decreases in the long term. During pregnancy, mammary cells differentiate into mature breast cells prepared for lactation. The mature breast cells have longer cell cycle, which allows more time for repair of damaged DNA and thereby reduces the rates of potentially deleterious mutations. The transient increase in breast cancer risk with pregnancy may be related to the increased proliferation of breast cells that precedes terminal differentiation before lactation. Alternatively, the increased risk may be due to the effect of high levels of hormones on subclinical cancers
