The roads are muddy after the rains. He has to walk on the road, - TopicsExpress

The roads are muddy after the rains. He has to walk on the road, left with no choice since development works have rendered the sidewalks unusable. The little respites on the upturned sidewalks are used by small kids playing their games. He sees a small kitten trying to walk on a slippery surface and then fall in the gutter; it gets sludge all over its kiddy-kitty coat of fur. It is hardly old enough to walk and tries to maneuver itself out of the slime of the drain on wobbly legs and succeeds only in coming to the main road; buses, cars, motorbikes whoosh past it. He shouts at the two kids playing nearest to the hapless kitten, Hey, get it out of the road; it will get crushed under the wheels! One of the small boys grabs the kitten by the scruff of the neck and puts it back on the slippery sidewalk; the kitty starts struggling anew. He is watching it trying to walk and is now himself placed precariously on the road, oblivious of any imminent danger. A bus does not whoosh past but makes contact. The kitten comes back to the road again and tries to lick the dark red stream coming from the head of the giant, now lying on the road. The blood tastes funny to the kitty and it unsteadily walks back to safety on the slippery, slimy, muddy sidewalk. The kids stop playing; the people inside the bus, now at standstill, try to watch the scene with a morbid interest, almost.
