The role of praise singing in our nascent democracy: praises no doubt plays a pivotal role in stirring up humans or super natural beings into actions. Those who worship God will attest to that as ware as those who serve the devil. When u praise someone who is move by praises s/he does even more. What do u praise ur leaders for? For their rights or wrongs? I can remember some years ago, thousands of Nigerian youths gathered in Abuja (most were unaware of the purpose until they reached Abuja) just to rally support for “Obansajo must stay a third term” I remembered one day, I was coming out of Rock View Hotel when I saw a crowd heading towards EFCC office chanting songs of war, as an activist, I followed at a distance waiting to see what the message will be, I was surprise when at the front of the EFCC gate, placards demanding for stoppage of the trial of James Ibori began to emerge, WOW, I was ashamed being in the vicinity of these enemies of Justice. Recently, we saw youths and elders of certain ethnic extraction protesting against the ongoing Oduagate’s scandals. Most times we get caught up in activisms that are against our ideologies either because of ignorance or greed. Most times our actions tend to forecast our innermost abilities if given the opportunity to serve. Before u praise a someone, remember that our resources are enough to satisfy all our needs but insufficient to satisfy all our greeds . is ur stances based on a bias hence contributing to the poll of insatiable greed or based on the needs of the nation? Is ur demands a bricks adding to the elevation of a just society or a bulldozer bringing down justice? Is ur activism in sympathy with tribe, political affiliation ,personality …. Or a solidarity with truism, justice, equity and the rule of Law? If we allow the answers to these questions and similar once to be our guiding principles in our struggles, we will be certainly contributing our own quota to the emergence of a better society. Remember , constructive criticism have a place in any democracy, but I’m yet to see the role of praise singing defined in any democracy. Long live Nigeria and happy celebrations of the semi final victory over Sweden.
