The romantic danger of being a writer is that people might not see - TopicsExpress

The romantic danger of being a writer is that people might not see the difference between the writer and his words. Yes, his words might represent his feelings, idiosyncrasies, ideals, and probably himself, but after all, words are representations. A word is a symbol, a sign, and not the actual thing. It only denotes something, but it is not, in itself, that which it denotes. A word is very much like a photograph: an image of someone or something. When you like a photograph, that does not necessarily mean that you like the person or the thing being photographed. And if in photographic terms, theres a photogenic person, in writing, let me coin a term, there is a lexicogenic (lexico- from the Greek lexis, which means word) person. The writer is different from the written. So when you say you love a writer, separate him from his words. Or, in a much simpler way, ask yourself: If he fails to write, will I still love him?
