The school log books from this day in 1914 further demonstrate how the schools backed the cause of Belgian refugees. The head of Breage school recorded: “Children have given up their presents of oranges- nuts etc which teachers generally give them at Xmas time. This and other money brought amounted to 15s 4d. This has been sent to The Western Morning News Belgian Fund. The children were quite please to sacrifice their presents for so good a cause…” A few days later the head of Colan school recorded, in a similar vein: “The children who usually have a plum pudding have given it up & have given their pence to the Belgian refugee children (for a doll & three boxes of chocolate)…” Cornwall Record Office holds over 200 school log books covering this period.
