The school where I performed today had a busy day. Prior to my first show, grades 3-4 & 5 had an A.L.i.C.E. drill first thing. I was able to observe first-hand the movements, actions and choices of both staff & students. It was informative and eye-opening as well as troubling and unsettling. The first thing I observed was a class in the computer lab. Even though the Principal had announced the shooter was in the office and the computer lab was just down the hall from that office, the teacher took his students out into the hall and into another room. At first, that seemed like a bad idea! Then, I thought, Wait. The computer lab is on the interior of the school. Behind a glass wall. Those students were targets behind a glass shooting gallery! By moving them to a room with a door that could be barricaded, that teacher went from 0% Safety Factor to probably 70-80%. And while that may seem cold, 7 out of 10 kids surviving is better than -0-. Second thing, the probability of Office Staff surviving....very low. They are first contact in most cases. I dont think ANY teacher thought when they decided to teach, Ill need to fend-off gunmen. Im sure that Office Staff didnt either! Third, these people DO NOT get paid enough!
