The schools are telling parents that an UNLAWFUL ABSENCE is any absence from a school WITH PARENTAL CONSENT for reasons other than those considered excused by the school. Parents are apparently BREAKING THE LAW if they take their kids out of school for any reasons other than what the school allows. What is the risk, you ask? If your child has unlawful absences, you risk being quickly turned over to the DFS these days. This year, with grant money from the federal government, my school district hired a social worker/court liaison for this exact purpose. My district is among many to hire social workers to be placed in our public schools. Are social workers in our public schools a bad thing?
