The season’s first snowfall and major cold spell followed by a - TopicsExpress

The season’s first snowfall and major cold spell followed by a few days of 40+ mph winds will bring the coyotes out when the wind finally ceases. They are up on their feet checking their territory and looking for food almost all day. With the West river deer season in full swing my major concern is walking around out there all camoed up and having someone use my fat ass to fill their doe tag. So I decided to use one of my favorite coyote calling techniques by traveling the back roads looking for moving coyotes. Be sure not to spook them by stopping to glass but try to determine which way they are headed as you continue to drive. Find a place to hide your vehicle about ¼ to ½ mile ahead of where they’re going. You have to be sure to put yourself ahead of them because coyotes can rarely be called back to territory they had just moved through. I usually start with the Dakota Yote Super Squeaker or Squeeze Squaller because they might be closer than you expect and using one of the mouth blown calls at close range could scare them. If you don’t get a response, switch to the Yoter or Badlander, which gives you greater range. Start softly at first and slowly build in volume. Have your gun ready because this technique will bring them in close and be sure to fill your fur shed. And remember… you have to be a good coyote hunter before you can be a good coyote caller.
