The seed for what would become the trilogy called M.E.M.B.E.R.S. - TopicsExpress

The seed for what would become the trilogy called M.E.M.B.E.R.S. first came to me in 1980, when I was twelve years old. I was fascinated by the idea of the Nephilim, first mentioned in the Bible at Genesis 6:4, and again at Numbers 13:33. This was a time in my life when I still had infantile concepts of right versus wrong, and a concretized version of god. I became aware through my Bible studies that it really wasn’t clear what the Nephilim were. I had been taught that they were the children of fallen angels (angels who came down from heaven and took human bodies and earthly wives for themselves, because of their lust) but Genesis chapter 6 was such a mystical passage that a case could be made for just about anything. The only thing we knew for certain was that, whomever or whatever they were, they had human desires and appearances. Later, at the age of 21, in 1989, I was living in Calimesa, California, and started thinking of those Nephilim again. I came up with the idea for a story about a kid whose father was trying to kill him. The father had special powers and, at the end, the kid proves to have superior powers; the book would slowly reveal that they were both Nephilim. I began writing the story enthusiastically, right away—on an IBM Selectric typewriter I had acquired from a local yard sale. The Selectric I bought was made in 1968, the same year I was born. The Selectric was different than electric typewriters, because it was the first to use a rotating spherical element, with the numbers, letters and characters reverse molded onto it, instead of the standard typebars. It was quicker than the electric models and never had the typebar collision and bunching problems common in the first models of manual typewriters. I called the story NUMBERS, after that passage about the Nephilim in Numbers 13:33. And so, I began writing the story about fallen angels in the fall of 1989. After about 70 pages into it, I was shocked at how horrific the story had become. It had such bizarre elements, and was a page-turner yet there was something deeper about it. I sent it (by actual mail, my children) to an old writer friend of mine—a man whose stories were a staple in the south—and his name was Leroy Spruill. He was in his 70’s at the time, and he enthusiastically responded that this was the story that would break me wide open as an authoress. Spurred on by his comments, I returned back to writing it, but one day I just looked at the page I was typing, and I thought, “No, this story has more depth than I have at this time in my life.” That had never happened to me before. Normally, the problem is the idea, not the author; in my case, the idea was magic—the problem was with me. I had not acquired enough wisdom to make the tale sing, and so, out of respect for this magnificent story that had to be told correctly, I retitled it as MEMBERS (originally for the members, or limbs, of a human body) and shelved it until I could return. In the meantime, I continued to write all sorts of novels, but the one great big love affair of my prose life stayed burning on the shelf. It glared at me, challenged me, and so I went on an intense spiritual quest. I studied so many things that my head spins just thinking of how to convey them all to others. But, for a quick rundown, I studied all Oriental cultures: Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Ninjutsu, Mikkyo, Ninpo, and more. I studied mythology, philosophy, ancient cities and evolution. I took hold of string theory, quantum physics, astrophysics—the list goes on and on. One day, in the fall of 2001, I finally felt able to return to the story. And, you know what? This time it all poured out of me. A single novel idea expanded into a trilogy, and the title was redone again, this time to the acronym M.E.M.B.E.R.S. I began to flesh out the covers of the books in my mind, and saw the depth of the story finally emerge. That’s when the tale of Daniel finally came to life. Since 2001 I have lived full-time with this epic tale of an ancient society of Fallen Ideas that came to be known as M.E.M.B.E.R.S. I am committed to bringing you a story that seems familiar in some of its action, and yet is completely original in its final resolve, its narrative style, and philosophy. In short, there is a deep message in this story, and is for readers of highest taste and discernment. Hope the story will stick with you the way it has for me. This is what I have felt worthy to devote a significant chunk of my life to. When you read all three books, I am sure you will absolutely see why, and be as astounded by the tale of Daniel, as I am. Just do an author search! ~Danielle Sainte-Marie From BOOK ONE: So, the Nephilim were men of extraordinary size and great strength, he thought. Daniel had always been much taller than most other children he had met—well, except for Sykes who was nearly as tall as he was—but, Daniel was certainly always stronger than any of them. Maybe I am one of these Nephilim, he chuckled aloud to himself. With that amusing thought, he closed the Bible. From a reader: I don’t know what it is—but you have this strange writing style that gives this story such eeriness. It’s like nothing I have ever read before! I am not a Christian, and I have never read the Bible, but this story sent chills up and down my spine! I can’t wait for the next book!” ~Dan Knells
