The selection of Thio Li Ann by the EU Delegation was hugely unpopular among civil society in Singapore. A silent protest was staged during her speech - activists stood before the stage holding placards with their mouths taped. A giant rainbow flag was unfurled where Thio could see it for the duration of her entire speech. To the EUs credit the activists were not told to sit down, nor was the protest disrupted. No security, no accusations of being disruptive or not going through the proper channels. I cant speak for Thio but no hard feelings either, between organisers and activists. I recognise that this is a very low bar but I cant help feeling this kind of means something in Singapore.
