The sensitive new age fisho! Anglers have become very conscious of social media, this is due to both a thirst for information and a driven desire to protect their right to fish. In a world where size maters and numbers are gold, information is key. Fishing reports, photos and shared information see anglers trawl the web in search of the upper hand for that vital piece of the puzzle. The fishing community is vitally aware of the many groups that would have sustainable recreational fishing outlawed. Anglers posting photos of fish covered in blood or catches of large legal bags are often berated by peers as many in the fishing community see such media as forming fuel for the fringe green groups. Recreational fishing is a multi billion dollar user pays industry. While its formally policed, informally the fishing community are their toughest critics! Put simply they understand their passion is a finite resource requiring proper management. This being said people should remember that we are a society that bases legal principals on innocent until proven guilty. Accusing people of illegal acts is a form of defamation, the fishing community needs to stand as one not behave like trolls and keyboard warriors. The right to cast a line has become Mornington Peninsulas favorite recreational past time. From September till May over 10,000 participants would drown a bait during the week on average. So keep fishing, keep within the limits, keep safe and keep it civil! From the bays at the moment its Snapper, Snapper, Snapper. The red fever has taken hold and dont expect it to let up till late December ! So many anglers are missing the mark not ever fish lives in 19-21m, in fact the really good bags have come in from 8-18.5 meters. In Port Phillip Bay the snapper are following a gradient, 19m in Mount Martha, 18.5m Mornington, 18m Frankston, 16m Seaford, 10-12m Rickets Pt and then 6-10m Williamstown! Its a typical snapper season, the first for a while! In Western Port its another typical classic season with good numbers of fish where they should be Eagle Rock, Lysarghts, Rhyl and the like! The water temperature is heating up and so is the bite. The snapper are going well both on the change of tide and run, its just a matter of putting the right bait in the right place at the right time! While the red fever infects most anglers this time of year, dont forget squid, whiting, gummy shark and flathead are all on the bite as well, they are equally responsive to the same rise in water temperature as the snapper! So get on the water and get on the fish! Its fishn season ! Till next week tight line and calm seas.
