The shadow boxing between government and the mines over the US$630 million Value Added Tax Refunds being withheld by government is blowing out of order with Mopani Copper Mines saying the jobs of over 20, 000 Zambians are at risk. Government and the mines are involved in a tussle that has seen the mines push for refunds while government who initially had signed a Statutory Instrument to pay the mines had a change of heart leaving the mines crying foul. Mopani Chief Executive Officer Danny Callow said the mining firm risked a 50% reduction in Copper production if the trend was not arrested. “In fact I must mention that some of these projects have since been suspended due to financial constraints and these suspended projects will have a huge impact about Copper production by a further 50%,” he said. “It stands to reason that not achieving not achieving this copper target will not be economically sustainable and will have a consequence of on job security of our 20,140 workers that we have and 1900 suppliers most them in Kitwe...zambiareports/2014/10/01/mine-tax-refunds-workers-suffer/
