The shootings and shootouts that have taken place in Indianapolis the last two days are symptoms of the violent mindset that is growing like a cancer within us. In one case, two men accidentally bump into each other and seven people get shot. In the other case, the police respond to a report of shots fired in a densely populated neighborhood, and when they arrive they shoot it out and one officer is killed, and one suspect is injured. On the surface these seem like matters of law and order, so we respond by hiring more police and making more restrictive laws. But, THE REAL ISSUE is that these are matters of LOVE and ETHICS. We are losing our ability to love and forgetting our responsibilities to civically share in life together ethically. The social order cannot be established or restored based on who has the most guns, but based on who has the most heart.
