The signal - called A Message From Earth - contained 501 personalized messages (some were photographs and drawings) that were turned into binary format and beamed out in a transmission that took almost 5 hours to complete. Many of the included messages were submitted to the team through Bebo - the now-defunct social media networking website. Almost half a million people contributed to the project in some fashion, including notable names like Deborah Meaden, Gillian Anderson and the late Sir Patrick Moore (who seems like a rather fitting candidate for this kind of thing) Regardless of whether or not the message is actually received by some sort of an intelligent alien civilization, projects such as this are extremely interesting. A little piece of Earth - of our generation - will be ricocheting throughout the cosmos for some time to come, but not forever (nothing lasts forever. Not even the universe)...
