The sinking of my ship. USS BUTTE AE-27. Really hard to take. This is where I stepped into the world as a teenager just out of high school (17). This is ultimately where I became the person I am today. The US Navy set me on this course of life I have lived my whole life. It created the career at City Utilities from which I will retire in 17 days. It shaped me as person and taught me respect and self pride. It taught me hard work while at the same time took me on several adventures all over the world. 7 Mediterranean cruises all aboard the Butte let me visit places like Egypt where I explored the Pyramids and the Sphinx on camel back. I traveled the canals of Venice, Italy in a gondola. Experienced bull fights in Madrid. Christmas mass at the Vatican. Lost city of Pompeii. Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Roman Coliseum. The Parthenon. Mt. Vesuvius and Mt. Etna volcanoes. The Rock of Gibraltar. The Cannes film festival and French Riviera. Sistine chapel. Saw Nazareth in concert Lisbon, Portugal. German autobahn. Traveled the Suez Canal. Other countries were Israel, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily. So many places and memories. I taught myself how to play the guitar on this ship. With A crew of 350 I watched several great friends come and go. Its sad to know that some of them have passed on and yet the whereabouts for most are unknown. I am looking forward to the reunion in 2015 and hope I see most of them there. Thanks for the great memories USS Butte AE-27. Ill miss you. Take care of her Davey Jones.
