The situation in the Ukraine calls for the inversion of the old adage war is just the continuation of politics by other means. The recent announcement that the EU will give the Ukraine $15bn in so-called Aid and John Kerry promised another billion will have similarly devastating consequences for the self-determination of the peoples of Ukraine as a Russian occupation of Crimea. A part of me thinks that the Russian-speaking workers and peasants in the East of the country are key to what the outcome might be, and whether a progressive alternative could be established in the Ukraine. While that might be a mere abstraction from the present reality it is fair to say that any form of Russian, EU or US interference be it political, economic or military will not serve the needs of a people so deeply disapointed with the Communist experience, shocked by the wave of privatisation that followed and excluded from having the chance of personal mobility which Europe has extended in the years that followed.
