The small town in Nevada where our daughter was born has shown us simple but amazing kindnesses over and over again. When we adopted Ivy, we had to overcome all kinds of hurdles to be able to leave the state with her. Yet the bank tellers bent over backward to accommodate us and make us feel like a million bucks. People at restaurants and stores were so instantly cheered by the news that we were adopting a baby that they showered us with instant and unconditional kindness. And from the moment we laid eyes on this little girl with the scrappy purple bow, the staff at the hospital was simply remarkable. Without hesitation, they treated us like we were Ivys parents and heaped respect on us that we couldnt have possibly deserved. One nurse Ill never forget asked her husband to trek to the hospital to give us a car seat that her granddaughter had been using for her own baby doll -- until she was persuaded that there was a real-life baby doll who needed it even more. And today, ordering a Thanksgiving dinner for Ivys birth family -- something that should be simple, but wasnt -- was handled by another set of angels who never said, we cant do that, but instead worked it out and treated this very flawed but very special family with dignity. There really is good in the world. Even on cold, crappy days, it can surprise and delight you and rock your world.
