The smaller or more isolated a community is, the more likely they are to know each other well, demand accountability for each other, and develop concrete standards of conduct. Sometimes the standards include, say, respect for elders, and sometimes something like eating fish thats been soaked in lye. The community most of us now live in is huge and broadly connected. One can now find 350 others, scattered around the world, who deeply enjoy crocheting chipmunk throw pillows. Thats a lovely thing. Sitting in ones own living room, one can also find thousands who will say vile, reprehensible things about just about any other person or group.and call it humor, or a truth others just are not brave enough to tell. One can find many people who will outright lie, and by mere laziness, one can help them spread those lies, comforting oneself with the feeling that even if the story isnt precisely true, its still right. I am not going to join anyone in that. I believe a new group ethic is in order; one that will somehow cover the essentials for a community of billions. What do you think it should contain?
