For me this is a political issue, not a religious one and, in fact, you risk playing the fundamentalist game if you make this a religious debate about readings and re-readings. These are political movements of the extreme right that manipulate religion to take power. They are political movements with political goals. Theyre, as ...the Algerian journalist based in France said to me once, “They are our extreme right.” And I really want to call on people…please help to support progressive Muslims and people of Muslim heritage by both challenging discrimination of Muslims but also not downplaying the very grave problem: we have these very extremist movements now cross regions in the world…Why? That’s another discussion- and they are committing gross acts of violence. They are killing thousands and thousands of civilians in places like Nigeria,…Pakistan…. They pose a grave threat to human rights. We have to take on these movements, and we need support in doing that. And there are people across these regions who are doing this work. I went out and interviewed 300 people of Muslim heritage who are combating fundamentalism but those people don’t get airtime…nobody’s really listening to them. And I got an email this morning from one of them…. She said “We have to denounce this. We have to make our voices heard at those “dealers of paradise” and say “It is forbidden for you to act in our name”.
