The smell of lebkuchen filled the house today--German gingerbread cookies. My daughter made them exactly right and wouldnt have made them if she couldnt do it right. She found the chewy base in a Bavarian meat market in Madison, Wisconsin--no other base will do. She followed the recipe of her Oma, my wifes mother from Germany. Then, three almonds atop each cookie. Bakes today, they will sit overnight, then get their finishing glaze tomorrow. Hard to keep my hands off before they are done.
