The so-called “Right to Farm” amendment is a proposed - TopicsExpress

The so-called “Right to Farm” amendment is a proposed amendment (Constitutional Amendment No. 1) to the Missouri Constitution that will appear on the August 5th, 2014 primary election ballot. This amendment will appear as follows: “Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to ensure that the right of Missouri citizens to engage in agricultural production and ranching practices shall not be infringed?” While it may sound good, this amendment only protects the rights of Big Ag and animal factories. This amendment does not provide any additional protections to independent family farmers. The goal of this amendment is to protect huge corporate factory farms from any accountability at the expense of family farmers and rural communities. In addition: Amendment 1 could give foreign corporations the right to own Missouri farmland without limits from the people or the legislature. This amendment, if passed, will trigger lawsuits from corporate agribusinesses to challenge protections for our rural communities from the excessive and irresponsible practices of factory farms. The future of farming and food will be determined by corporate lawyers, bureaucrats and judges. Amendment 1 would deny due process and the right of farmers and landowners to defend their property rights against corporate agribusiness. This vaguely worded constitutional amendment would create unforeseen consequences and provide protection for corporate agribusiness to do virtually whatever they want, however they want and wherever they want. Missouri farmers already have the right to farm. This is an unnecessary corporate takeover of our state constitution that forever guarantees the rights of corporations to write their own rules and bypass democracy and local control. Please Vote No on Amendment 1 tomorrow!
