The so called Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Delhi has invited Mr. Nawaz Shareef to attend a ceremony of succession which itself is against the spirit of Islam. As we know, Islam does not encourage the concept of priest class or succession. I wonder when Shahjehan’s dynasty, which invited the first Bukhari form Central Asia, has vanished how the Imam’s dynasty still been allowed to continue by Muslim community. As a student of history of India I know that the current Imam Mr. Ahmad Bukhari is neither an Islamic scholar nor a saintly man and as a local of Jama Masjid I firmly know that he holds no influence on the local Muslims too. By surpassing India’s Prime Minister and inviting Pakistan’s P.M he has not only violated the country’s protocol but also the Islamic spirit and the teachings of Prophet who was always very kind to even his bitterest enemy. Above All, this kind of rhetoric only puts Muslims of India in a very awkward position as Bipan Chandra has rightly said that one form of communalism fattens the other form of communalism. I wish the Muslims of India in very strong words shall condemn the move of Imam and make Jama Masjid democratic and use the big platform to address the socio, educational, economic and ethical issues of the community. I have more hope from the younger generation of all faith to get rid of the clutches of priest class and follow the spirit of their respective faiths i.e. truth, honesty, compassion, sympathy, empathy, love, brotherhood etc. If U like please forward to your friends.
