The soils and the entire agro-ecological characteristics within the compound of Bishop Gatimu Ngandu girls in Nyeri is loamy with a PH of between 4 and 6.5. From a 25cm deep soil sample, the soil shows proper drainage and aeration with no evidence of a near surface hard pan. The area receives an average precipitation of 500mm during the short rains and up to 1500mm during the long rains. It has a cold climate that goes to a minimum of 12 degrees celcious in the cold months and up to 27 degrees celcious in the hotter months. With a bit of lime on the soils, the area can support perennial pastures either for baling or better still with three times the yields if the pastures would be used for direct grazing.
