The source of energy for animals and humans are food. We shape our world through our own muscles and labour. The source of energy for machines are fuel. In the 16th century the world first machine that do not require human labour to operate come into existence. The steam engine pump. Using coal and fire to produce steam energy to move the machine. Human are cut off from relying on their own physical labour to work the land. The west invented the machines. Before they got this head start on the world,the Europeans control only 35% of the planet but when it come to the peak of the industrial revolution age they have control over 85% of the planet. The more energy you have the more things you can achieve.
