The soviet photograph (TASS Agency) of sailors running to action - TopicsExpress

The soviet photograph (TASS Agency) of sailors running to action stations aboard Kiev gives an excellent view of the electronics on the inboard side of the island superstructure. The numerous ECM radomes and ESM antennae are mounted centrally, and duplicate the arrangements on the outboard side of the island. On platforms projecting from the lower catwalk are two Tee Plinth electro-optical sensors, used as back-up for the radar fire control systems. The other close-up photo of the island superstructure of Minsk, taken in the East China Sea in 1979 (US Navy), allows a full sight of the major air surveillance and tracking radars mounted on the Class vessels. The bigger Top Sail radar antenna, mounted to the right of the central lattice mast, is an essential part of the SA-N-3 area defence missile system. The smaller one to the left of the central mast is Top Steer radar antenna (which can be found on top of the aft superstructure&mast of the Kirov class BCGNs). Top Steer comprised a curved lattice scanner with a rectangular frontal aspect, ounted back-to-back with a Head Net A antenna. It employed frequency scanning to provide3D surveillance & tracking, particularly essential in a ship operating large numbers of aircraft. It also made up for a useful back-up of Top Sail system (traditional Soviet practice...).
