The speed and strength with which the Islamic State (IS, formerly Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS) has gained ground in Syria and Iraq is unprecedented. While the civil war continues in Syria, and unrest has spread to neighbouring countries, questions arise regarding the role of violent extremist groups, and what their rise means for the future of the region. What are the relationships of groups like ISIS and al Nusra Front to national, regional and international actors? What significance do recent developments have for the role of al Qaeda and – importantly - how should the international community respond? On Monday 15th September from 18.00-20.00 at the Leiden Campus in The Hague, Hivos and ICCT will host a seminar addressing the role of violent extremist groups in Syria, Iraq and beyond.
