The spell binding performance of Jacqueline Fernandez in the Sri Lankan English language film According to Mathew is expected to propel her to Hollywood. “She’s a tremendous actress. I am absolutely certain she’ll make it to Hollywood through this film. Her body language and accent are truly international,” the film’s internationally acclaimed director, Chandran Rutnam, told Express here on Wednesday. Asked how he was so sure when better known Indian actresses had not made it to Hollywood, Rutnam said: “Indian actresses, beautiful though they are, have a problem with their accent and body language, which are not internationally acceptable. Jacqueline’s schooling in several countries and her Eurasian ethnicity give her the kind of international persona which Hollywood looks for.” In According to Mathew, which is nearing completion, Jacqueline plays Dalrene Ingram, an innocent young Eurasian Secretary trapped in an infamous serial killing case involving her paramour cum boss, who, ironically, is the Vicar of a well known Anglican Church in Colombo. In this real life episode set in the 1970s, Fr.Mathew Peiris deftly uses his charm; the “stigmata” that appears on his palm; and an uncanny ability to exorcise evil spirits, to gain people’s confidence and murder them eventually. Peiris’ astonishing run comes to an end when he murders Dalreen’s husband, Russel, and his own wife, Eunice, in a desperate bid to marry Dalreen. “I was stunned by the intensity of Jacqueline’s portrayal of Dalrene’s dilemmas,” Rutnam said. “Frankly, I never expected her to do it since I had previously seen her only in song and dance sequences in Bollywood films. But in my film she comes out as a natural actress.” And Rutnam should know what he is talking about. His earlier English film A Common Man with Ben Kingsley and Ben Cross in the lead, has just bagged three awards including “Best Director’ at the Madrid International Film Festival. Rutnam is only the second South Asian after Satyajit Ray, to have won the Best Director’s award in the “general category” (not in any of the “sub-categories”), at an international film festival.newindianexpress/entertainment/english/Lankan-film-could-propel-Jacqueline-Fernandez-to-Hollywood/2013/07/31/article1711090.ece
