The split squat is a brilliant exercise which rivals the ‘king of exercises’ the Squat. Here are some reasons why: Your glutes (bum muscles) only fully contact when your thigh is parallel to the ground. As it is hard to go that deep with a squat the glutes as well as other muscles in your legs do not work as hard, however a split squat allows you to much deeper much easier. Which means you use more of your leg muscles to a greater degree! In the split squat stance you mainly use on leg. So you build strength up in each leg evenly stopping any imbalances. Another benefit due to the unilateral (one leg) nature is that you have to work hard to keep yourself upright while also balancing. To balance the legs need to contract a lot which makes them work even harder. While the core is working very hard to help with balance and to keep you upright. So what’s not to like from this excellent whole body exercise? Easy to do, works everything, safe, helps with strength and great for fat lose due to the high amount of work! Have fun!
