The square in front of the fifteenth century Palazzo Venezia , the residence of the Pope Paul II , was the first great urban intervention of Rome 500 , the goal of the famous Running of the Barberi , which took place during Carnival along the Via del Corso , in which the square served as monumental conclusion . The realization of the colossal monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (1885-1925) caused a radical transformation of the entire area near the Capitol : on the opposite side of the Palazzo Venezia was built the Palace twin of Assicurazioni Generali , while the Palace Venice , which occupied the space in front of the monument , was dismantled and rebuilt further back , near the Palace . After the Great War , with the burial of the Unknown Soldier and the destination of the monument to the seat of the head of government , it reinforced the image of the square as a political center and new hole of the city . On the west side of the square is the Palazzo Venezia , Cardinals residence , then papal , built by Cardinal Barbo and expanded by his election as pope ( Paul II ) . Is the first example of Tuscan Renaissance palace built in Rome : a compact volume , a rectangular plan and corner towers , and an inner courtyard porch and porch . Currently home , over the eponymous Museum , the library of the National Institute of Archaeology and History of Art , which houses over 300,000 volumes and 15,000 manuscripts , drawings and prints .
