The staff of the Lyme & Tick-borne Disease Research Center thanks - TopicsExpress

The staff of the Lyme & Tick-borne Disease Research Center thanks all of our supporters and donors for their generous gifts over the years to support Lyme research and education. We also thank the many patients and the doctors who participate in our research endeavors. Over the last year, we have embarked on several new projects, most notably the testing of a novel Lyme assay that appears able to detect active infection almost immediately in early Lyme disease and then to turn negative after the infection has been treated. Should this test prove as good as we hope, this would represent a significant advance over the current antibody-based tests which are insensitive in early Lyme disease and remain positive long after the infection is gone. In addition, we are involved in studies exploring the role of an aberrantly activated immune response in the perpetuation of chronic Lyme symptoms. Our educational programming continues, highlighted by a new joint fellowship with our Family Medicine Division at Columbia to train Family Medicine doctors to become experts in Tick-borne diseases. There has been so much progress in the application of modern biotechnology to the investigation of tick-borne diseases. This is great to see as it helps to propel research forward exponentially faster. So, be encouraged, and thank you once again for all of your support. If you wish to make an end-of-the-year donation, you can do so on-line by using the following web address: https://giving.columbia.edu/giveonline/?schoolstyle=56437. Happy Holidays! Brian A.
