The stars are so beautiful tonight; did you ever consider that they are constant and they shine day and night ... butyou only see their brilliance when contrasted with the dark night sky? I find there a parallel lesson... We are constantly blessed , so much so that we cannot count the favors that God grants us so freely in the sunshine of His love . From the marvelous design of our bodies, to the supply of all our needs --- physical, financial, spiritual, emotional and all others, even to the point of providing aesthetic beauty to stir our hearts, to satisfy our sensory needs, He gives us all we have. We can easily overlook and take for granted those blessings, unless we spend some time in the dark valleys of human suffering... In times of want, sickness, pain, stress, fear, grief, loneliness. It is through those hard times we learn the source of our blessings and we learn the truest appreciation of "little things".... like peace, a good day, companionship, rest, an answered prayer. After passing through those chasms I can much better appreciate an early morning cup of coffee on a peaceful deck....overlooking a pond that mirrors tall pines and is occasionally rippled by a resident catfish .... listening to the plaintive call of a mourning dove....with someone who knows me so well that conversation is optional. Simply sitting there drinking in the peace and quiet together is .... enough. OR like tonight just sitting alone in the dark looking at the stars and listening to the frogs and crickets. I thank God for the night times in my life, the seasons of fear and grief and loneliness... because I learned in those valleys what I could never learn on the mountaintop. I learned the true beauty of the stars that shine in my life.
