The state of rescue and relief work in kashmir is open to many - TopicsExpress

The state of rescue and relief work in kashmir is open to many interpretations. I have to admit that Ive felt differently at different high and low points in the last few days here. Ive floated in a boat with a young officer and his men, as they pulled people to safety from houses that are now crumbling. Ive also seen the same guys being pelted with stones and abuse by youngsters... they still keep doing their job for an average of 15 hours a day, every day, for more than a week now. One thing I can tell you for sure is that I have not seen even a SINGLE representative of the state administration. Not one... its a bit shocking. The people living in tattered tarpulins on a road divider in Tengpura that I photographed this morning are livid. I dont have a perspective yet, on a very fluid political situation. But I know they need help... they need dry rations, blankets, tents, even tarpulins, clean drinking water... they need hope and they need help. Theyll play games, some will hoard the aid sent (actually a LOT of that will happen) But it needs to keep coming. The human condition and what might happen to them in the fast onsetting winter is horrifying.
