The state reported a 5.6 percent unemployment rate in September for Calhoun County as the area saw large gains in employment over the year. The Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Information said in its latest report that employment has “soared” in southwest Michigan, and that Battle Creek has added 2,000 jobs in the past year. Manufacturing added 700 positions to the workforce, with most of the gains coming from the transportation equipment industry.
