The station in Killarney was targeted on Friday morning. It is believed the attack had its origins following an arrest under the Public Order Act. After the device was tossed at the station, gardaí on duty gave chase on foot and a local man, in his 20s and reportedly known to gardaí, was arrested close to the scene. The incident happened at around 7.30am. An external wall of the station, which is the headquarters in South Kerry, was hit. Gardaí at the station managed to quench the fire without having to task the fire service and nobody was injured. It is understood the man had been arrested under the Public Order Act the previous day and had been released. However, sources indicated he returned with a petrol container which was ignited and thrown at the front wall of the station. Early on Saturday, a man was brought before a special sitting of Killorglin District Court charged with arson at the station in Killarney. He has been remanded on bail under strict conditions and is to appear again before Tralee District Court on Thursday. Full details about the attempted arson incident and the subsequent court hearing were not divulged to the media, other than to indicate the suspect was from Killarney and in his 20s. The Garda Press Office in Dublin said it was not advised of the special sitting of the district court and was not in a position to notify the media. © Irish Examiner Ltd. All rights reserved
