The statue of Sardar Patel, launched as a partisan political campaign in the run-up to the election, will cost Rs 2,900 crore and the bid has been won by L & T. Are we aware of any other statue--of Gandhi, Nehru or Indira Gandhi, which has cost so much ? It is being built up obviously as a tourist spot. But what if Bihar wants to build a statue of Rajendra Prasad, West Bengal of B.C. Roy or Jyoti Basu, TN of Kamaraj or Annadurai....will public money will be sanctioned for them ? Odisha should ask for Rs 3,000 crore for a statue of Biju Patnaik in the next budget.
