The stomp dance can be seen as a demonstrative prayer...When we stomp dance together, we are praying together. There is great spiritual power that is raised up to Our Creator in unison..Our breath, our chants, prayers, and calls, with our inner thoughts are carried up to creator while we dance...it is easy to get lost in yourself while dancing, when you here the rythym of the drums and the singing , and the turtle shells shaking...There is nothing like it...Our movements bring order and match with the order and harmony of the Universe..and Creator ...The Muscogee Creek stomp dance counterclockwise around the fire... Their heart is on the left and nearest the fire..And that is where Creator resides when we dance..They will stomp dance from the dark til dawn..A male calls out a song leader, and he calls out his songs..A woman is picked and she follows in with her shells strapped to her legs, usually tortoise, or turtle..holes are cut and they are filled with rocks...she keeps the rythym with the songs ...others will follow, depending on the community, there could be from 10- 100s..they stomp in circle usually around 4 songs and another song leader is called out..there is usually a little rest in between .. and they will continue around the fire all night long..We dance to honor our ancestors..but we dance too because we need each other..the dance soothes things and in dance we are united and there is no anger, it expresses happiness, joy and gratitude....We need dance, its in our heartbeat, and is our spirit.
