The stories from last weekend spoke of the period of time back in 2007 (our trip to Baja) after we’d learned that Genie’s cancer had returned. Over these next few weekends (through July 7), I’ll be publishing stories that speak of things that occurred near the end of our time in 2011. Today’s story (and last night’s) focus on something in June 2011. We’d gone to Bermuda for Genie’s birthday (and, maybe, to say goodbye). I know I’ve spoken about Bermuda a great deal over these last few days, but there’s an important reason. We’d always loved Bermuda. It’s a small place, but a lovely place. On every trip, we’d see something that would last. And sure enough, on this trip, we saw something that no one could have expected. On the evening of June 2, her birthday, as we sat near the harbor for dinner, in the sky that was streaked with oranges and violets, Genie saw a lone goose flying, and she took my hand and whispered, “Ruby.” There are certain things – memories, places, events – that will always carry special significance for me. Bermuda is high on that list. There are two chairs there – one pink, the other aqua – that will always be our chairs. A thin place, a place where heaven and earth stand so close, a place where it’s possible to look and hear a laugh and see a smile. Enjoy: flyinggeese.me/Weiskircher/Flying_Geese_Shaded_Pastels.html.
