The story continues...part 6 After what seemed like hours, I saw the flashing lights piercing through the dark that had settled onto the park. I looked out the window and saw two deputies getting out of the car. The deputy who got out from the drivers seat looked as though he should have retired ten years earlier. He was short and pudgy and his grey hair was just barely covering his head. I let out a giggle as I imagined him in foot pursuit of a criminal. His partner looked as though he were still in high school. He was average height. I surmised that he must have been the star quarterback at the high school only a few years before. I couldnt help but wonder why a cute little thing like him would want to be a deputy in a small town like Timberville. I was lost in my musings when Pudgy knocked on the cabins door. We got a call from you? Pudgy asked. Im Deputy Ainsworth and this heres my partner, Deputy Gentry. What seems to be the problem here? By this time, Diesel was already making his presence known. Deputy Ainsworth must have had a dog at home because Diesel was sniffing of him as though he were a piece of freshly baked ham. Ainsworth didnt seem to mind, so I filled them in on the afternoons events. I was walking my dog down the trails between the cabins. He saw a squirrel and went after it. The next thing I knew is that he had an arm in his mouth and I was passing out. I came back to and we ran back here and called yall. Thats it. Thats all I know. Wheres the arm now? Gentry asked. Do you have it with you? Hell no, I dont have it with me. I wasnt touching that thing. Its out in the woods where we left it! I exclaimed. Surely Mr. Quarterback didnt finish in the top of his class. Imagine him thinking that I would have touched that thing. Can you show us where it is, maam? he asked. He was on a roll with these foolish questions. Listen to me. There is no way that Im stepping foot out of this cabin as long as its dark outside. I can give you and Deputy Ainsworth an idea of where to look, but I aint about to go on your search party. Theres an arm out there and I figure the rest of the body is somewhere out there, too, dead or alive. I dont aim to be the one to find it. There. I hoped I had said that plain enough for them. Feel free to search all you want. Just be sure to latch the gate back on your way out. Pudgy spoke up in a whiskey toned voice. Maam, we are going to search a while. It will be morning before well have any extra help. Can we borrow your dog to help us comb the area? Borrow my dog? I was dumbfounded. No, you cant borrow my dog. My dog is staying right here with me. You can search all night. Thats fine. But this dogs not stepping foot out there. Im locking this door behind yall and yall just need to latch that gate if youre gonna be here awhile. This lakes not opened back up yet and I dont need people thinking someone is here. Mr. Quarterback took his turn talking: The gate was wide open when we got here, maam. The latch had been busted off. Seems like someone already knows youre here.
