The story of Maryam (‘alayhassalaam) is one that holds so many beautiful lessons and meanings. After she went through a difficult and painful labour and gave birth to Prophet Isa (‘alayhissalaam), it was said to her: “Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented…” (19:24-26). Even after going through a painful ordeal that actually left her wishing for death, she was instructed to shake the trunk of a palm tree to gain sustenance. Although she was in a fragile state, Allah (swt) still expected her to work and exert effort. We often think that going through intense pain exempts us from working hard to sustain ourselves and to move forward, contributing positive things to our communities. But the opposite is true! Regardless of our state, we have to be in a constant state of turning to Allah and working as hard and diligently as we can to be better and do better until we meet Him (swt).
