The story of the Afro-Guyanese in the post-Slavery era is both remarkable and poignant. Forever accused of being a lazy fellow who didnt want to work (by those for whom he had worked for centuries), immediately he was free to work for himself his labour knew no bounds and his ambition no horizons. Far from a spendthrift, he pooled his money with that of his fellows and bought sugar and cotton estates which had fallen into disuse. He purchased enough property to found most of the larger villages and towns of Guyana, (By the way, it is this history of communal enterprise upon which the ideology of the new Co-operative Republic of Guyana is based.)
