The strelitzias are looking beautiful at the moment. They flower - TopicsExpress

The strelitzias are looking beautiful at the moment. They flower throughout the winter months, from May until November. If you wait a while you may see the Southern Double-collard Sunbirds coming to feed on the nectar - it is interesting to note that these sunbirds do not pollinate the flowers. The true pollinator is a different species of sunbird, which perches on the blue arrow-like structure in the flower, where the pollen and stigma are located. Our sunbirds are nectar thieves - they take the nectar reward without doing any pollination work for the plant. Photos: Alice Notten
