The strength of the team is in each individual Firefighter. The strength of each Firefighter combined is the team. Developing teamwork takes a lot of training and sweat, especially when learning new tactics or utilizing new equipment and techniques. This team concept is critical to the success of any emergency response organization. NASA Ames Fire Department recently teamed up with our mutual aid partners from Mountain View Fire for training on new lightweight high rise hose packs. These packs are designed to be easily carried by the firefighters for deployment within mid- to high-rise structures. Once at the level of the fire, crews can then hook the hoses into available standpipe systems that supply the needed water to fight fire. Previous versions of this system used very heavy 2 1/2 inch hoses and brass couplings. The new lines now weigh a almost half as much as the old hoses, and use lightweight aluminum connectors, which help reduce firefighter fatigue when ascending multiple-story buildings. Our thanks to Mountain View Battalion Chief (Acting) John Walls, and the crew of MVFD Engine 51; Captain Zach 007 Bond, Firefighter Brendon Seigal, and Firefighter Steve DeSipio for their participation and assistance during the training!
