The struggle to develop a vaccine for the HIV virus has been making progress. Researchers’ with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and the Military HIV Research Program have found that sub-membrane proteins can have an effect on antibody binding. Research up to this point was focused on the trimeric surface of the Env (envelope) protein. They used Sequencher DNA analysis software to identify several different strains of HIV, and then using the DNA sequence map they cloned different combinations of the HIV backbone and the Env protein. Further research should allow the scientists to design more specific antibodies that could lead to an vaccine.
